Scanning images

There is a scanner in the computer class. The computer with scanner is primarily for scanning purposes. There are also scanners in Maarintalo. Nro. 17 in the map.

Cameras for loan

You can borrow digital cameras from the department of Architecture. Photographers office is in the basement. There is also a studio and a darkroom for developing films.

Scanning a picture with Photoshop

  • Turn the scanner
  • Start Adobe Photoshop
from the start menu or desktop icon.
  • Insert picture into scanner
Put pictureside downward and the top of the picture pointing yourself.
  • In Photoshop, select File menu. There is a submenu called Import and there you will find TWAIN.
  • Select material
  • Take Preview and select area to scan. Now you should also select color depth and resolution you want. Resolution is dependent the use of the picture: printing etc. pictures should have higher resolution than those only viewed on the screen.
  • Scan a picture by pressing 'Scan' button. Some scanning programs want to save picture now. After scanning you can edit your image.

Basic advice for excersices is: Scan with 300dpi and scale to 150dpi in final printing size.

Merging images in Photoshop

There is a tool for merging images if you have to scan a large paper in parts.
In Photoshop:
- scan the images into one folder. Images must have same resolution.
- turn them into same direction. Use Photoshop's measure tool to define horizontal or vertical line and turn with: Image->Rotate Canvas->Arbitrary. Save.
- Merge images with File->Automate->Photomerge.

Image formats

Comparison of graphics file formats in Wikipedia

Lossy Compression

Lossy compression method means that image will lose quality every time it is saved in such format. JPG is compressed with lossy method.
Example in Wikipedia

Lossless Compression

Image saved with lossless compression will remain it's quality. Such formats are GIF, PNG and TIFF.

Formats without compression will not change when saved. Psd and TIFF (without compression). Psd retain the Photoshop editing options like layers.

Image size

A common problem in the department's computer class is that there is a long and slow printing queue to the plotter when students try to plot at the same time just before deadline. Unnecessary large image sizes will slow down plotting. Plotters max. resolution is 150dpi.
